Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy (GDP of 617 billion USD in 2026) and the continent’s largest market with 220 million consumers. Investing in Nigeria can generate exceptional returns — but the country also presents very real risks that every investor must understand and manage. This guide objectively weighs both sides.
Nigeria in 2026: between reforms and challenges
Since 2023, the Tinubu government has undertaken painful but necessary economic reforms: removal of fuel subsidies (saving 10 billion USD/year), unification of the exchange rate (naira depreciation of 60% in 2023-2024), interest rate hikes. In 2025-2026, the positive effects are beginning to materialize: inflation declining, reserves rising, institutional investors returning.

Setting up a business in Nigeria: procedures
Registration is done through the CAC (Corporate Affairs Commission):
- Private Limited Company: minimum capital 100 000 NGN (≈65 USD), online registration via the CAC portal in 3–7 days
- NIPC (Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission): for foreign investment projects — mandatory certificate for certain sectors, offers tax incentives
- Lagos Free Trade Zone (Lekki): modern free zone, 25-year corporate tax exemption, duty-free imports, simplified work permits
Taxation: Corporate tax 30% (standard-sized companies), 20% for SMEs (turnover < 1 billion NGN), 0% for micro-enterprises. VAT 7.5%. The tax regime is complex — a local accountant is essential.
Unavoidable risks in Nigeria
- Naira depreciation: the NGN has lost 80% of its value against the dollar since 2019. Projects with dollar-denominated costs and naira revenues can see their margins evaporate. Strategy: invoice in USD or index prices to inflation.
- Power outages: the public grid supplies an average of 4 hours/day of electricity. Every business must plan for generators (diesel) or solar systems — a significant operating cost.
- Security: Lagos is a major city with all the associated risks. The North-East (Borno, Boko Haram) should be avoided. Lagos, Abuja and the major cities of the South remain operational for business.
- Bureaucracy: customs, permits and inspections can be slow and arbitrary. A local fixer or consultant is recommended.

FAQ — Investing in Nigeria 2026
Is it safe to invest in Nigeria in 2026?
For investments in formal sectors (tech, FMCG, energy) in secure areas (Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt), Nigeria remains viable and potentially very profitable. The key is to manage currency risk carefully and to have a solid local partner. Direct investment without local knowledge is not recommended.
How can you manage currency risk in Nigeria?
Invoice in USD whenever possible, hold reserves in foreign currencies through a DOM (Domiciliary Account) authorised by the CBN, use forward contracts for predictable NGN obligations. Some investors opt for structures that collect in foreign currency and convert only what is needed locally.
What is the best sector for a first investment in Nigeria?
Energy (solar + storage to power SMEs) is recommended as a first investment because revenues are contractual (Power Purchase Agreement), clients are creditworthy businesses, and the need is structural. Fintech is profitable but highly competitive and requires specific sector expertise.
