South Africa is no longer #1 — and it’s not a matter of wealth, but of speed. Our Les Afriques Index 2026, calculated across 7 sourced indicators and 25 economies, crowns Egypt ahead of Morocco and Ghana. Here are the 15 countries truly taking off this year.
A transparent methodology
To establish this ranking, we selected 25 African economies — the continent’s major powers and high-momentum countries — and scored them across 7 indicators grouped into 3 axes, all sourced and dated:
- Economy (40%): real GDP growth in 2026 (IMF), nominal GDP 2026 (IMF), foreign direct investment 2025 (UNCTAD).
- Digital (30%): internet penetration (DataReportal, January 2025), mobile money adoption (GSMA).
- Openness (30%): diaspora remittances 2025 (IFAD), governance (Mo Ibrahim Index 2024).
Each indicator is scaled from 0 to 100 and then weighted. The result: an index that rewards momentum — growth, digitalisation, openness — rather than GDP size alone. That is why South Africa, the continent’s largest economy, ranks only 8th, penalised by growth close to 1%, while Rwanda (7.2%) and Ethiopia (9.2%) are climbing strongly.
Critical note. This index is indicative and does not constitute investment advice. It is partly based on projections (IMF growth and GDP) and surveys (DataReportal internet penetration, Mo Ibrahim governance), each with its own biases — informal remittance channels, for example, are not counted by IFAD. A “dynamic” country is not necessarily a “wealthy” country: South Africa, the continent’s largest economy, ranks only 8th, precisely because its growth is stagnating around 1%.

How to read this ranking. The score, out of 100, measures momentum — not wealth. A 65.9 (Egypt) does not mean “30% richer” than a 49.9 (Morocco), but a significantly higher level of dynamism. Conversely, the gap between 2nd (Morocco, 49.9) and 3rd (Ghana, 49.3) is marginal: these two countries are separated by fine margins.
The five countries driving the continent
1. Egypt — the undisputed hub. Africa’s top recipient of FDI ($15.45 billion in 2025, UNCTAD) and diaspora remittances ($41.5 billion, IFAD), with an internet penetration rate of 82%. A $430 billion economy backed by the Suez Canal and tourism.
2. Morocco — stability that pays off. Growth of 4.9% confirmed by the IMF, the highest internet penetration in the sample (92%), 8th continental rank in governance. A model that durably attracts investment.
3. Ghana — West African momentum. 4.8% growth, 70% internet penetration and governance in the continental top 10. The country confirms its status as the anglophone gateway to West Africa.
4. Kenya — the digital champion. Global leader in mobile money (M-Pesa), 48% internet penetration and $5 billion in diaspora remittances. East Africa’s technology hub.
5. Senegal — the francophone dynamic. Growth of around 6%, diaspora remittances at 11% of GDP ($3.3 billion) and solid governance (11th). One of the most stable countries in West Africa.
What this ranking tells us
Three lessons stand out. First, digitalisation has become a marker of dynamism: the top-ranked countries combine solid growth with strong digital adoption. Second, the diaspora carries significant weight: Egypt and Nigeria owe part of their ranking to their massive remittance flows. Finally, governance remains a differentiating factor: Mauritius and Botswana, small but well-governed, outrank giants such as Angola or the DRC.
Conversely, some important economies remain held back: Algeria and Tunisia by sluggish growth, the DRC and Mozambique by weak governance and still-limited digital access.

FAQ
Which African country is the most dynamic in 2026?
According to our index, it is Egypt, which combines the highest FDI attractiveness, the largest diaspora remittances and advanced digitalisation. Morocco and Ghana complete the podium.
Why is South Africa only 8th?
Because our index rewards momentum, not size. South Africa remains the continent’s largest economy ($480 billion), but its growth limited to around 1% in 2026 penalises it against countries growing at 5–9%.
How was this ranking calculated?
25 countries scored across 7 indicators (growth, GDP, FDI, internet, mobile money, remittances, governance) normalised from 0 to 100 and weighted by three axes: economy (40%), digital (30%), openness (30%). Sources: IMF (April 2026), UNCTAD (2026), DataReportal (2025), IFAD (2025), Mo Ibrahim (2024).
Which countries are progressing the most?
Ethiopia (9.2% growth) and Rwanda (7.2%) show the strongest growth in the sample. Côte d’Ivoire (6.2%) and Benin (around 6%) confirm the West African dynamic.
