Millions of views, zero advertising revenue: this is the harsh reality for thousands of African French-speaking creators on YouTube. In 2026, the majority of French-speaking sub-Saharan African countries remain excluded from the YouTube Partner Program. What exactly are the countries eligible for YouTube monetization in Africa? What solutions exist? This article provides a complete overview.
Why YouTube monetization remains out of reach in so many African countries
The question keeps coming up in forums and Facebook groups dedicated to creators on the continent: why doesn’t YouTube pay in West Africa and other French-speaking regions? The answer lies in several technical and commercial factors that Google — YouTube’s parent company — has not yet fully addressed.

The YouTube Partner Program: a very restricted eligibility list
The YouTube Partner Program (YPP) conditions access to advertising monetization. To be part of it, a creator must reside in an eligible country. In 2026, this list includes a handful of African countries — mainly Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania — but excludes virtually all of French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa.
As a result, a creator based in Dakar, Abidjan, Kinshasa, Bamako or Lomé cannot activate direct monetization on their channel, regardless of their subscriber count or watch hours. African creators YouTube revenue limitations thus suffer a double penalty: they generate audiences without receiving the corresponding advertising remuneration.
Obstacles related to payment systems
Even when a country is theoretically eligible, practical limitations related to payments constitute a major barrier. YouTube pays its revenues through AdSense, which requires:
- A bank account or electronic payment method accepted by Google
- A valid tax identification number in certain countries
- A verifiable billing address
- A minimum payment threshold (100 USD) before any transfer
In many French-speaking African countries, access to international banking services remains limited. Local debit cards are often not recognized by AdSense, and SWIFT transfers generate prohibitive fees for modest amounts. Mobile Money (Orange Money, Wave, MTN MoMo), which is massively adopted across the continent, is still not integrated into Google’s payment ecosystem in 2026.
Advertisers absent from the local market
Advertising monetization relies on the presence of advertisers who bid to display their ads. Yet in French-speaking African markets, the volume of active Google Ads advertisers remains low. Even if a creator managed to activate the YPP, the CPM (cost per thousand impressions) would be structurally low — often between 0.10 and 0.50 USD — compared to 3 to 10 USD in Europe or North America. This economic reality makes YouTube advertising revenues negligible for creators targeting a local audience.
The strategies African creators are adopting to work around these barriers
Faced with these systemic obstacles, a generation of African French-speaking creators has developed alternative business models, often more robust than sole dependence on YouTube advertising.
Alternative monetization platforms for creators in Africa
The market for alternative monetization platforms for creators in Africa has grown considerably in recent years. Here are the most widely adopted solutions:
- Patreon and Ko-fi: These recurring crowdfunding platforms allow subscribers to directly support their favorite creators, entirely bypassing YouTube’s geographic restrictions. They accept international card payments, and some creators generate several hundred euros per month thanks to their diaspora community in Europe.
- Afrostreamflix and African VOD platforms: Regional players now offer creators the ability to distribute their video content through revenue-sharing models adapted to African realities, with payments via Mobile Money.
- Substack and monetized newsletters: Creators with large audiences rely on paid newsletters to diversify their income, particularly those whose content has high informational value (finance, entrepreneurship, current affairs).
- Direct sponsorships: Negotiating partnerships directly with local or pan-African brands — telecoms, fintech, food and agriculture — remains the most reliable source of income for many French-speaking creators with significant audiences.
- TikTok Creator Fund and Instagram Bonuses: Although their programs have their own restrictions, TikTok and Meta opened additional African countries to their monetization funds in 2026, offering a credible alternative to YouTube for short-form content.
Registering abroad: a risky but widespread solution
A common practice is to register one’s AdSense account in an eligible country — often France, Belgium or Canada for French-speaking creators — through a relative or a legal entity. This approach technically allows access to YouTube monetization, but it carries significant legal risks (tax fraud, violation of Google’s Terms of Service) and can lead to the permanent suspension of the account. It is by no means recommended.
The community model: monetizing the audience, not the views
The best-performing creators in the African French-speaking space have understood that their true asset is not their YouTube views, but their community. Premium WhatsApp groups, online courses sold through tools like Gumroad or Selar.co (a Nigerian platform rapidly expanding in the French-speaking space), paid webinars: all of these are levers that enable direct monetization, without algorithmic intermediaries.
What YouTube should do — and what creators can demand
In 2026, several associations of African French-speaking creators have formalized requests to Google for an expansion of the YPP to countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Sénégal, Cameroun and the DRC. The argument is economic: with tens of millions of active YouTube users in these countries, Google is leaving value on the table by not investing in the local creator ecosystem.
Intermediate solutions do exist, however: integration of Mobile Money into AdSense, creation of a dedicated fund for African creators modeled on the TikTok Creator Fund, or lowering the payment threshold for emerging markets. These demands are finding a growing echo, and several industry sources indicate that Google is seriously studying an extension of the YPP to new African markets by the end of 2026.
Complete list of African countries eligible for YouTube monetization in 2026
This is the question that hundreds of thousands of African creators type into search engines every month: which countries are eligible for YouTube monetization in Africa? In 2026, YouTube has progressively expanded its Partner Program (YPP), but French-speaking Africa remains massively excluded. Here is the country-by-country situation.
African countries eligible for the YPP (YouTube Partner Program)
To date, the African countries officially included in the YouTube Partner Program eligibility list are:
- South Africa ✅
- Egypt ✅
- Nigeria ✅
- Kenya ✅
- Ghana ✅
- Tanzania ✅
- Uganda ✅
- Ethiopia ✅
- Zimbabwe ✅
- Morocco ✅
- Tunisia ✅
- Algeria ✅
These countries are essentially English-speaking or from North Africa. Among them, one French-speaking sub-Saharan country has recently made its entry in certain extensions of the list: Côte d’Ivoire, whose full eligibility is still being rolled out according to testimonies from local creators in 2026.
French-speaking African countries still excluded from the YPP
The list of excluded countries remains long and painful for creators:
- Sénégal ❌
- Mali ❌
- Burkina Faso ❌
- Democratic Republic of Congo ❌
- Cameroun ❌ (partially English-speaking, but still excluded)
- Togo ❌
- Bénin ❌
- Niger ❌
- Guinea ❌
- Madagascar ❌
- Congo-Brazzaville ❌
- Gabon ❌
- Chad ❌
- Mauritania ❌
These exclusions are not related to the quality of content or audience size. They result from commercial and technical decisions by Google, based on the level of maturity of the local advertising market and the availability of payment infrastructure. For creators in these countries, direct monetization through YouTube remains impossible in 2026, regardless of their subscriber count or accumulated watch hours.
How to check if your country is eligible?
To check your country’s eligibility in real time, go to YouTube Studio → Monetization → Check eligibility. You can also consult the official list of eligible countries on the YouTube Help Center, regularly updated by Google.
YouTube monetization in Africa: concrete solutions for creators in non-eligible countries
Being based in a non-eligible French-speaking African country does not mean giving up on monetizing your YouTube channel. Legal and effective solutions exist, adopted by a new generation of African creators who have turned the constraint into an opportunity.
1. Create a legal entity in an eligible country
The most direct solution is to register a company or sole proprietorship in an eligible African country — Morocco, Tunisia or Ghana being the most accessible destinations for French-speaking creators. This entity allows you to open an AdSense account with an address in an eligible country, and to legally receive YouTube revenues. Some Senegalese or Ivorian creators have registered structures in Morocco or Tunisia to access the YPP.
2. Join a partner MCN (Multi-Channel Network)
MCN networks active in Africa, such as Africamagic, Trace, or international aggregators, can integrate African channels into their ecosystem and redistribute a portion of advertising revenues, even if the creator resides in a non-eligible country. This option involves ceding a portion of revenues (between 20 % and 45 % depending on the contract) but offers quick access to monetization.
3. Monetize via Super Thanks, Super Chat and channel memberships
YouTube offers direct fan monetization features that are sometimes available in countries not eligible for the standard YPP: Super Chat (live donations), Super Thanks (tips on videos), and channel memberships. Their availability varies by country, but they represent a path worth testing from YouTube Studio.
4. Redirect the audience to alternative revenue-generating platforms
Platforms such as Patreon, Buy Me a Coffee, Ko-fi or Fanbox allow any African creator to monetize their audience through subscriptions or donations, independently of YouTube. The most structured creators use YouTube as a showcase and redirect their community to these platforms to generate stable revenues, often higher than what YouTube advertising would generate in low-CPM markets.
5. Brand deals and local influencer marketing
In French-speaking Africa, direct partnerships with local or regional brands (telecoms, banks, fast-moving consumer goods companies) are often the most lucrative source of income for creators. Channels with 50,000 highly engaged subscribers can negotiate sponsorship contracts well above what the YPP would generate, as they offer ultra-targeted access to communities that are difficult to reach otherwise.
FAQ: YouTube monetization and French-speaking African creators
Can I monetize my YouTube channel if I am based in Côte d’Ivoire or Sénégal in 2026?
No, not directly through the YouTube Partner Program. These countries do not yet appear on the official YPP eligibility list. You can however monetize your audience through direct sponsorships, platforms like Patreon, or by selling courses and exclusive content.
Why doesn’t YouTube pay in West Africa despite millions of views?
The absence of payment comes down to two main reasons: geographic ineligibility for the YPP, and the absence of compatible payment infrastructure (no Mobile Money integration, limited access to international bank accounts). Views generate revenue for Google, but not for local creators.
Are there alternative monetization platforms suited to Africa?
Yes. Selar.co is particularly recommended for selling digital products with Mobile Money payment. Ko-fi and Patreon work well for creators whose audience is partially based in Europe or North America. For video, African VOD platforms are gradually emerging with adapted revenue-sharing models.
Can my content still be monetized by YouTube without my knowledge?
Yes. YouTube can display ads on your videos even if you are not a YPP partner. In that case, the generated revenues go entirely to YouTube/Google. This is an unjust reality that many African creators are actively denouncing.
What is the best French-speaking African country to legally establish a creator business?
In 2026, Morocco and Tunisia offer the most favorable ecosystems for creators seeking a legal and banking framework compatible with international payments, including AdSense. For sub-Saharan Africa, Sénégal is developing a regulatory framework for the digital economy that could facilitate these steps in the medium term.
