In Abidjan, horns blare under a blazing sun. In a small shared space in the Cocody neighborhood, a young woman adjusts her headset, eyes fixed on her screen. Her name is Aïssata, she is 26 years old, and she runs an express delivery start-up. Like her, thousands of young Ivorians are today shifting the lines of the African economy. Côte d’Ivoire, long associated with its cocoa and political crises, is forging a new reputation: that of a driver of entrepreneurship on the continent.

Why is entrepreneurship growing in Côte d’Ivoire?
Côte d’Ivoire is establishing itself as one of the entrepreneurial hubs of West Africa thanks to the growth of Abidjan, the return of part of the diaspora, the development of incubators and strong demand in digital services, logistics, agri-food and fintech.
Fertile ground for new ideas
Côte d’Ivoire boasts one of the most dynamic growth rates in sub-Saharan Africa, with an average of 6% per year since 2012. This economic vitality creates an environment conducive to innovation and initiative-taking.
“Here, you feel that everything is still possible,” says Jean-Marc Kouadio, founder of the e-commerce platform IvoireMarket. “There are needs everywhere, and therefore opportunities around every corner.”
With a young population – more than 60% of Ivorians are under 25 – and rapid urbanization, demand for modern services is exploding. Transport, health, education, finance: everything is there to be reinvented, and local entrepreneurs are seizing the opportunity.
Incubators in full swing
Abidjan is now dotted with coworking spaces, incubators and technology hubs. Places like Seedspace, DoniLab and Incub’Ivoire support project holders at every stage of their development.
“Five years ago, I didn’t even know what an incubator was,” says Mariam Diabaté, creator of an agricultural management application. “Today, I have raised 150,000 euros thanks to the support I received.”
These structures offer training, mentoring, access to funding and sometimes even premises. They are supported by public-private partnerships, NGOs, or international institutions such as the World Bank or the European Union.
A government betting on innovation
Unlike other African countries, Côte d’Ivoire has made support for entrepreneurship a strategic priority. The National Development Plan 2021-2025 devotes several billion FCFA to the digital economy, SMEs and vocational training.
“The State cannot do everything, but it can create a favorable framework,” explains Mamadou Touré, Minister of Youth Promotion and Employment. “Our goal is to transform young people into wealth creators, not job seekers.”
Schemes such as the Young Entrepreneurs Support Fund or the Agir program for youth have already enabled thousands of projects to come to life. In 2023, more than 18,000 young people benefited from direct State support.
A diaspora that returns and invests
Another key factor: the gradual return of the Ivorian diaspora. Trained abroad and often experienced, these profiles inject skills and capital into the local economy.
“After ten years in Paris, I decided to come back,” says Stéphane Gnahoré, an engineer turned entrepreneur in renewable energy. “I felt that the moment had come. Here, you can have a real impact.”
The government encourages this movement with tax incentives and reintegration programs. As a result, more and more Ivorians from abroad are creating businesses or investing in local start-ups, particularly in tech, agro-industry and logistics.
Women on the front line
Female entrepreneurship is experiencing spectacular momentum in Côte d’Ivoire. According to a study by the African Development Bank, 30% of Ivorian companies are led by women, a figure well above the continental average.
“Women no longer want to wait,” says Fatou Koné, founder of the natural cosmetics brand Naya. “We create our own paths, with or without permission.”
Initiatives such as the Women Entrepreneurship and Leadership for Africa (WELA) program or the Invest for Women fund specifically support female entrepreneurs. Microfinance, which is booming, also plays a crucial role in their empowerment.
Toward a pan-African ecosystem?
Côte d’Ivoire is no longer content with shining locally. It now attracts start-ups from West Africa, international investors and major events such as the Africa CEO Forum or the Abidjan Inventors’ Fair.
“Abidjan is becoming a regional hub, in the image of Nairobi or Lagos,” analyzes Awa Ndiaye, a Senegalese innovation consultant. “It is a connected, ambitious city that inspires confidence.”
Fundraising rounds are multiplying: in 2022, Ivorian start-ups attracted more than 50 million dollars, a record. Players such as Orange Digital Ventures, Partech Africa and Launch Africa now invest there regularly.
But beyond the figures, it is a new energy running through the country. An energy made of dreams, risks and resilience. An energy that could well redraw the economic map of Africa in the years to come.
Will Côte d’Ivoire become the beating heart of African entrepreneurship? Or is it still only at the beginning of a long journey?
