France Visa from Tunisia: Key Points
Visa applications for France submitted in Tunisia are processed by the French Consulate General in Tunis, the sole authority empowered to make decisions. The reception of applications and the collection of biometric data are delegated to an outsourced service provider: TLScontact, present in Tunis and Sfax. Appointments are made exclusively online on the TLScontact website, after completing the application on the official France-Visas portal.
Tunisia has not signed any tariff facilitation agreement with France: Tunisian applicants therefore pay standard fees. The short-stay visa (Schengen) remains by far the most requested. In 2024, France concentrated nearly 60% of Schengen visa applications submitted by Tunisians, totalling 106 617 files, with a refusal rate of approximately 20%. It is best to prepare a solid application before booking a slot.
The passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the planned return date and contain at least two blank pages. Biometric data (photo and fingerprints) are collected at the centre, recorded in the Visa Information System (VIS) and reusable for a new application submitted within 59 months. Fees are paid in cash, in Tunisian dinars, at the chancellery rate in effect on the day of submission.
The Consulate General strongly advises against using intermediaries claiming to facilitate obtaining a visa: no official channel exists outside of France-Visas and TLScontact. Any parallel offer is solely aimed at monetising services that these intermediaries cannot provide.
Types of Visa
Short-Stay Visa (Schengen, Type C)
For tourism, business or a family visit. It authorises a stay of a maximum of 90 days over any 180-day period throughout the entire Schengen area. This is the most requested category from Tunisia. The 90-day count is rolling: every day of presence in the Schengen area over the past 180 days is deducted.
Long-Stay Visa (Type D, VLS-TS)
For any stay exceeding 3 months. It generally serves as a residence permit (VLS-TS) and must be validated online within 3 months of arriving in France. Without validation, the permit is not enforceable and departure from the territory may be compromised.
Student Visa
Issued in the form of a VLS-TS “student” visa after a mandatory Campus France procedure via the Études en France platform. It allows stays of 4 months to 1 year, travel within the Schengen area, and work of up to 964 hours per year (20 hours per week).
Work Visa
Reserved for persons holding a job offer or employment contract and, depending on the case, a work permit issued by the French authorities. The contract must be compliant and the employer identifiable.
Family Reunification or Spouse of a French National Visa
To join a family member established in France or a French spouse. It requires proof of family ties and, for family reunification, prior authorisation from the French administration.
Procedures and Documents
The procedure takes place in five steps:
- Create your application on France-Visas: complete the online form, obtain the summary and the personalised list of documents to provide.
- Create your TLScontact account and enter the France-Visas reference for each applicant.
- Book a slot in Tunis or Sfax. Slots go quickly, especially during peak demand periods. Online payment of the service fee confirms the slot.
- Submit the application in person at the centre: document check, payment in dinars, photo and fingerprints.
- Collect your passport after notification by SMS and email, in person or via a third party with a power of attorney.
TLScontact centres in Tunisia:
- Tunis: Immeuble Majda, rue de la feuille d’érable, Les Berges du Lac 2, 1053 Tunis. Tel. (+216) 313 69 050. Submission Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 16:30, premium service on Saturday from 9:00 to 13:00.
- Sfax: Résidence Saray, croisement de la route Lafrane km3 et ceinture Bourguiba, Sfax.
Opening hours are reduced during Ramadan. A paid premium service allows submission on Saturday and access to a dedicated waiting area. Each traveller, even within a family or group, must have their own appointment. The information entered on France-Visas must match exactly that of the passport, otherwise the application may be blocked.
TLScontact only collects applications: the decision belongs solely to the Consulate General, which may request additional documents or summon the applicant to an interview. A complete submission therefore does not equate to automatic visa issuance.
Standard documents to present on the day of the appointment (exact list according to the type of visa):
- Valid passport containing at least two blank pages, with a number identical to that on the appointment confirmation.
- Printed and signed France-Visas receipt.
- Recent identity photo compliant with ICAO standards (white background).
- Proof of financial resources: bank statements, pay slips, employer’s certificate.
- Proof of accommodation: certificate of accommodation for a private visit (30 €), hotel reservation or lease.
- Schengen travel insurance covering a minimum of 30 000 € in medical expenses.
- Round-trip transport reservation.
- Printed TLScontact appointment confirmation letter.
Children under 12 are exempt from biometrics; their application is presented by one of the parents. An incomplete application may be refused, or submitted with the signing of a document listing the missing items, with no guarantee of visa issuance. For students, a second TLScontact appointment is charged at an additional 100 TND.
Processing Times and Costs 2026
Two timeframes are added together: that of obtaining the appointment (a few days to several months depending on the season) and that of consular processing after submission. The Consulate recommends obtaining an appointment at least 3 weeks before departure and planning the application 2 to 3 months in advance. Applications may be submitted up to 6 months before departure for a short stay, and 3 months for a long stay.
Fees are broken down into application fees (French administration) and TLScontact service fees, both paid in dinars at the chancellery rate, in cash, at the centre.
| Visa Type | Application Fee | Indicative Processing Time | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short-stay (Schengen, type C) | 90 € adult / 45 € child 6-11 years / free under 6 years | 15 to 45 days after submission | 90 days max over 180 |
| Long-stay (type D) | 99 € | 15 to 45 days, variable | 4 months to 1 year depending on purpose |
| Student (VLS-TS) | 50 € via Campus France (99 € outside EEF procedure) | 15 to 45 days | 4 months to 1 year, renewable |
| TLScontact service fee | 28 € per application (non-refundable) | — | — |
| Certificate of accommodation (private visit) | 30 € (paid by the host in France) | — | — |
In total, for a short stay, plan a realistic budget of approximately 150 to 180 € per person, insurance included, before any additional costs.
Added to these amounts are travel insurance (15 to 30 € on average) and any translation fees or optional TLScontact services. A tax is also due when validating the VLS-TS online after arriving in France, at a reduced rate for students. Holders of a Tunisian diplomatic or official passport are exempt from the short-stay visa.
Most Common Reasons for Refusal
In 2024, the Schengen refusal rate for Tunisia reached 21.39%, and approximately 20% of applications submitted to France were rejected. The most common reasons are:
- Insufficient financial resources: lack of proof of sufficient means to cover the stay, or inability to obtain them legally.
- Unjustified stay conditions or unreliable information: unproven accommodation, incomplete or inconsistent documents.
- Risk of misuse of the visa’s purpose: concern about illegal overstay in France after the visa expires, due to insufficient ties to the country of origin (employment, family, property).
- Non-compliant or falsified travel document: damaged, forged or falsified passport.
The refusal decision states the reason and may be contested within 2 months before the Commission de recours contre les décisions de refus de visa d’entrée en France (CRRV). A new application remains possible, subject again to non-refundable application fees.
