France Visa from Cameroon: the key points
A Cameroonian wishing to travel to France must, in almost all cases, obtain a visa before departure. The application process now takes place in two stages: an online pre-application on the official France-Visas portal, followed by the physical submission of a file at a reception centre managed by a private service provider.
Since 2 October 2023, it is no longer the embassy that directly receives applications. Submissions are made at the TLScontact centres in Yaoundé, Douala and Garoua. The decision to grant or refuse the visa remains the exclusive responsibility of the consular section of the French Embassy in Yaoundé and the French Consulate General in Douala. TLScontact only collects the files and biometric fingerprints: it has no decision-making power.

The most requested visa from Cameroon is the Schengen short-stay visa (type C), used for tourism, family visits or professional trips of less than 90 days. Long-stay visas come next, driven in particular by students.
The submission centre depends on your place of residence. If you live in Adamaoua, Centre (excluding Nyong-et-Kellé), Est, Extrême-Nord, Nord or Sud (excluding the Océan department), your file is submitted in Yaoundé. Residents of Littoral, Ouest, Nord-Ouest, Sud-Ouest as well as the Océan and Nyong-et-Kellé departments submit in Douala. The decentralised centre in Garoua receives applicants from the far North during occasional sessions.
Since 10 April 2026, the new European Entry/Exit System (EES) has been in force throughout the Schengen area: upon arrival, your biometric data and border crossing are recorded electronically. This does not change the application procedure in Cameroon, but allow for a little extra time at border control.
Types of visa
The type of visa depends on the duration and purpose of the stay. Choosing the wrong category is one of the classic causes of refusal.
Short-stay visa (Schengen, type C)
For stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period: tourism, family or friendly visits, business, short training. This is the standard visa for a first trip to France.
Long-stay visa (type D)
For stays exceeding 90 days. It most often takes the form of a long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit (VLS-TS), to be validated upon arrival in France with the ANEF (formerly OFII). It entitles the holder to a residence permit.
Student visa
For pursuing higher education. Since 2 May 2024, students are required to go through the Campus France “Études en France” procedure before booking an appointment at TLScontact. The visa is issued after acceptance by the French institution.
Work visa
Reserved for people with a job offer or contract in France, in particular through the “passeport talent” or employee schemes. The employer must generally obtain prior work authorisation.
Family reunification
To join a spouse or parent legally residing in France. The procedure often falls under OFII and requires a family reunification decision before the visa application.
Procedures and documents
The procedure takes place in several mandatory steps. Do not skip any step: an incomplete file is refused or sent back for completion, which extends the processing time.
- Create an account on France-Visas (france-visas.gouv.fr) and complete the online form. Since 1 January 2020, this form can no longer be completed on paper. You will receive a file number (FRA…).
- Prepare the supporting documents corresponding to the visa requested: the exact list is generated by France-Visas at the end of the form.
- Book an appointment on the TLScontact website. The choice of centre (Yaoundé, Douala or Garoua) depends on your place of residence. Students must first go through the Campus France messaging system to obtain their time slot.
- Submit the file at the TLScontact centre: document check, collection of fingerprints (10 fingers) and photo, payment of fees.
- Track the application online, then collect the passport at the centre or by express mail (paid option).
Fees are paid on-site at the TLScontact centre, generally by bank card or according to locally accepted payment methods. Service fees are separate from visa fees: you pay once for the visa to the French State, and once for the reception service to TLScontact. Keep all receipts, as they will be required when your passport is returned.
Beware of scams. The French Embassy has flagged fraudsters posing as its agents and demanding money, notably for a fake “medical certificate”. No document can be requested outside official counters, and booking an appointment on France-Visas is free. Never pay an intermediary to “guarantee” a visa: no one can guarantee a consular decision.
The basic documents required for a short-stay visa are as follows:
- Valid passport with at least two blank pages, and valid for at least 3 months after the planned date of exit from the Schengen area;
- France-Visas application form printed, dated and signed;
- Two recent identity photos meeting the required standards;
- Proof of financial resources (recent bank statements, pay slips);
- Proof of accommodation (host certificate or hotel reservation);
- Round-trip airline ticket or reservation;
- Travel insurance covering medical and repatriation costs of at least 30 000 €, valid throughout the Schengen area;
- Proof of situation in Cameroon (employment certificate, enrolment, land title, dependants).
On the day of the appointment, bring the original of each document plus a complete photocopy of the file, organised in the order of the list. Visa and service fees are paid on-site.
Processing times and costs 2026
Visa fees are set at national level and published by France-Visas. They are in addition to the service fee of 38 € collected by TLScontact for each file submitted, which is approximately 24 930 FCFA at the rate applied by the service provider.
Regarding processing times, the official guidance is clear: submit your short-stay file at least 15 working days before departure, and allow one month for a long-stay visa. In practice, processing a complete file often takes anywhere from a few days to three weeks, but this can extend during periods of high demand (start of the academic year, end-of-year holidays).
You may submit an application up to 6 months before the departure date. The appointment calendar generally offers visibility of four to five weeks: book your slot as soon as your file is ready.
| Type of visa | Application fee | Indicative processing time | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schengen short stay (12 years and over) | 90 € | 15 working days to 3 weeks | 90 days max in 180 days |
| Short stay (child aged 6 to 11) | 45 € | 15 working days to 3 weeks | 90 days max in 180 days |
| Short stay (child under 6 years old) | Free | 15 working days to 3 weeks | 90 days max in 180 days |
| Long stay (full price) | 99 € | Approximately 1 month | 3 months to 1 year (often VLS-TS) |
| Long stay student (Campus France) | 50 € | Approximately 1 month | Duration of studies |
| TLScontact service fee (all visas) | 38 € (≈ 24 930 FCFA) | — | Per file |
In addition to these amounts, depending on the applicant’s profile, ancillary costs may apply: the Campus France procedure for students (approximately 50 000 FCFA), the mandatory travel insurance for the Schengen visa, and, after arrival, the VLS-TS validation fee. For students, this fee amounts to approximately 150 € since 1 May 2026 (2026 Finance Act). Check the amount in force at the time of validation on the ANEF portal.
The most common grounds for refusal
A refusal is notified in writing with the reasons stated. The most common ones in Cameroon are:
- Insufficient or unjustified financial resources. Recent, credible and regular bank statements are essential: a single large deposit made just before submission raises suspicions.
- Incomplete file or non-compliant documents. Missing document, photo not meeting standards, insurance not valid throughout the Schengen area, unsigned form.
- Risk of not returning to Cameroon. The officer must be convinced that you will return: stable employment, dependants, assets in the country. A file with no strong ties is often refused.
- Inconsistency between the stated purpose and supporting documents. Declaring tourism without a reservation or itinerary, or a stay whose duration does not match the financial means shown.
Frequently asked questions
The points most frequently raised by Cameroonian applicants.
How long before departure should I submit my application?
At least 15 working days for a short stay and one month for a long stay. Submission is possible up to 6 months in advance. Allow more time during periods of high demand.
Can I submit my file directly at the embassy?
No. Since 2 October 2023, submissions are made exclusively at the TLScontact centres in Yaoundé, Douala or Garoua, by appointment. The embassy and consulate alone retain decision-making power.
Does the Schengen visa allow me to visit other European countries?
Yes. A short-stay visa issued by France authorises you to travel throughout all 27 countries of the Schengen area, within the limit of 90 days in any 180-day period. However, your main destination must remain France.
