France Visa from Côte d’Ivoire: the key points
To enter France, an Ivorian passport is not enough: a visa is mandatory, regardless of the purpose of the stay. Applications submitted in Côte d’Ivoire are processed by the French Consulate General in Abidjan, the only authority empowered to make visa decisions.
The submission of files is entrusted to a private service provider: VFS Global Abidjan. This is the official center for France in Côte d’Ivoire. There is no TLScontact center for France in Abidjan. VFS Global receives the files, collects fingerprints and the photo, then returns the passports. It makes no decisions and does not influence processing times.
People who have been legally residing for more than three months in Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia, holding an ordinary passport, and traveling to France as their sole or main destination may submit their application in Abidjan.
The most requested visa remains the Schengen short-stay visa, used for tourism, family visits, and short business trips.
Types of visa
Schengen short-stay visa (type C)
This is the standard visa for a stay of a maximum of 90 days over any period of 180 days. It covers tourism, visits to relatives, and short business stays. It also allows travel throughout the entire Schengen area.
Airport transit visa (type A)
Mandatory for an Ivorian passport holder transiting through a French airport without entering the Schengen area. It does not allow leaving the international zone of the airport.
Long-stay visa (type D / VLS-TS)
Required for any stay of more than 90 days. The VLS-TS (long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit) exempts the holder from applying for a residence permit during the first year, provided it is validated online within three months of arriving in France.
Student visa
For studies lasting more than 3 months. The Campus France procedure is mandatory for Côte d’Ivoire, which is listed among the so-called CEF countries (Centers for Studies in France), before any application is submitted to the consulate.
Work visa (employee)
The employer in France must first initiate the recruitment procedure and obtain a work authorization. The future employee only submits their file after approval from the relevant French authorities.
Family reunification
Reserved for the spouse and children under 18 years of age of a foreign national legally residing in France. The application starts from the French prefecture, not from Abidjan, and goes through an investigation that generally takes several months.
Procedures and documents
The procedure takes place in five steps.
- Create an account on France-Visas (france-visas.gouv.fr) and fill in the online form, then print and sign it.
- Make an appointment on the VFS Global Abidjan website (visa.vfsglobal.com/civ/fr/fra). The appointment is generally given within 2 working days.
- Pay the service fees online at the time of booking the appointment.
- Attend the center with the complete file, complete the biometric collection, and pay the visa fees.
- Track the file with the reference number provided at submission, then collect the passport at the center or by mail.
The VFS Global center is located at Centre commercial HLM, rue des Carrossiers, Zone 3, in Abidjan. Phone: (+225) 25 20 00 48 70, Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm (8h to 16h).
Biometric collection (fingerprints and photo) is done on-site. It is mandatory, except for children under 12 years of age and for applicants who have already obtained a Schengen visa bearing the VIS notation within the last 59 months.
Standard documents for a short-stay visa:
- France-Visas form printed and signed
- Passport valid for at least 3 months after the return date, with 2 blank pages
- Two recent identity photos conforming to standards
- Proof of resources: bank statements for the last 3 months
- Schengen travel insurance covering at least 30 000 € in medical and repatriation costs
- Round-trip flight reservation
- Proof of accommodation: hotel reservation or attestation d’accueil
- Proof of situation: employment certificate, trade register, or student card
For a student visa, add the validated Campus France file, the admission letter from the institution, and a proof of resources. From 1 August 2026, the minimum resources threshold required for foreign students has risen to 877,50 € per month, compared to 615 € previously.
If a document is missing, you may choose not to submit the file and return later. If you submit an incomplete file anyway, the VFS Global agent will ask you to sign a waiver listing the missing documents. A complete file does not guarantee that the visa will be granted.
Timelines and costs 2026
Visa fees are set by the French State and are non-refundable in the event of a refusal. Service fees, collected by VFS Global, are added to the total cost. Amounts in euros are collected in CFA francs at the rate set by the French authorities.
| Visa type | Application fees | Indicative timeframe | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schengen short stay | 90 € (adult) / 45 € (6-12 years) / free under 6 years | 10 to 15 days on average | 90 days over 180 days |
| Airport transit | 90 € | A few days | Transit only |
| Long stay (VLS-TS) | 99 € (50 € for students via Campus France) | 2 weeks to several months | Up to 12 months |
| Family reunification | 99 € | Several months (prefecture investigation) | Long stay |
In addition to these amounts, VFS Global service fees apply: 19 000 FCFA per file submitted, non-refundable. Passport delivery outside Abidjan costs approximately 6 000 FCFA extra. Service fees are paid online via Orange Money, MTN, Moov Money, or bank card.
As an indication, 90 € corresponds to approximately 59 000 FCFA, and 99 € to approximately 65 000 FCFA. The exchange rate applied is the one set by the French authorities, which may vary slightly.
For a short stay, allow an average of 10 to 15 days of processing for an Ivorian national, and at least 15 days for a third-country nationality. Allow one month in total between submission and the departure date. You may submit your application up to 6 months before the trip.
For a long stay, the timeframe varies depending on the purpose: it can reach several months if a civil status document verification is required. A student visa generally takes 4 to 8 weeks after the submission of a complete file, which is why it is important to start the process at least 4 months before the start of the academic year.
The most common reasons for refusal
- Insufficient resources: bank statements too recent, empty, or showing a balance too low to cover the duration of the stay.
- Incoherent travel plan: vague itinerary, hotel reservation that does not match the announced dates, absence of proof of accommodation.
- Risk of non-return: insufficient ties to Côte d’Ivoire, no stable employment, attested family, or assets.
- Missing or non-compliant travel insurance: coverage absent or below 30 000 €.
