The Passing of Claudius Hawmmond: Côte d’Ivoire Loses a Discreet Pillar of Its Cultural Industries
The Ivorian cultural scene has lost one of its most atypical figures. Claudius Hawmmond, known to the general public by the pseudonyms “Boss Wilson” or “Papa Wilson”, passed away on the evening of Thursday, 24 September 2026 following a stroke (AVC). The information was made public by the Agence Ivoirienne de Presse (AIP), while the channel A+ Ivoire expressed its dismay the following day on its own communication channels.
Claudius Hawmmond: A Man of Several Lives
What strikes one immediately about Claudius Hawmmond’s career is his ability to have traversed radically different worlds. A former military man, he first made a detour through music before turning to audiovisual and cinema — a trajectory that, in West Africa as elsewhere, remains uncommon in the cultural sector. This type of reinvention illustrates the growing fluidity of African creative industries, where the boundaries between disciplines are progressively fading.

In 2013, together with his wife, he founded H Studios, a production company of which he assumed the directorship. This entrepreneurial initiative in a sector where the independent production fabric remains fragile is worth highlighting: setting up an audiovisual production structure in Côte d’Ivoire means navigating financing constraints, distribution challenges, and access to technical equipment that still hinder many creators on the continent.
“La Dernière Voix” and the Television Footprint
It is through the series “La Dernière Voix” that Claudius Hawmmond reached the widest audience. His character “Wilson” — or “Boss” — had, according to A+ Ivoire which paid tribute to him, “left a mark on viewers” and contributed to “bringing to life characters that will remain in people’s memories”. One must, however, distinguish the established fact — the popular success of the series — from the emotional framing that the channel, as a broadcast partner, naturally gives to this tribute. A+ Ivoire remains a commercial player whose mourning communication is also a way of valorising its own catalogue.
It nonetheless remains true that the longevity of a television series and the memorability of a character constitute concrete indicators of cultural impact. In an audiovisual landscape where local productions must compete with foreign content, an Ivorian series capable of building a loyal audience represents a genuine contribution to the diversity of representations on the small screen.
A Cinema Under Construction
Beyond television, Claudius Hawmmond had also acted in the film “Ôbatanga” and had, according to the AIP, just taken part in the shooting of “Zanka”, directed by Ivorian filmmaker Khady Touré. This last project, unfinished in terms of public release at the time of his passing, raises a question that the press release does not address: what will become of this film and of the work accomplished by the actor? The question of the posterity of works in progress at the time of an artist’s death is rarely treated with the rigour it deserves, neither by the media nor by cultural institutions.
More broadly, the passing of Claudius Hawmmond comes in a context where Ivorian cinema is seeking to reclaim a place on the continental and international stage after several difficult decades. Côte d’Ivoire had been, in the 1970s and 1980s, one of the centres of African cinema; reconstituting this dynamism requires precisely profiles like his — actor-producers capable of carrying projects from start to finish, mobilising financing and supporting directors.
What the Loss Reveals
The premature passing of a cultural entrepreneur raises structural questions that collective mourning tends to eclipse. H Studios, the production company he had co-founded with his wife — what is its situation today? Will the projects underway be brought to completion? Will the talents he was supporting benefit from institutional backing or from the artistic community’s support? The AIP press release does not indicate this.
These questions are not aimed at diminishing the legitimate emotion that this death evokes, but at recalling that a cultural industry is not built solely on individual talents: it requires structures, transmission mechanisms and public policies capable of absorbing the loss of key players. In Côte d’Ivoire as in much of sub-Saharan Africa, the fragility of independent cultural enterprises remains a persistent challenge.
Putting It in Perspective
Claudius Hawmmond leaves behind a career that encapsulates both the possibilities and the limitations of contemporary Ivorian cultural industries: a man capable of reinventing himself several times, of creating an independent structure and of establishing himself on screen, in a sector where institutional recognition and economic safety nets remain insufficient. What to watch in the coming weeks: the fate of the film “Zanka” and the future of H Studios, but also the way in which the artistic community and public authorities will respond — or not — to the loss of one of its cultural entrepreneurs.
Who Was Claudius Hawmmond: Actor, Producer and Figure of Ivorian Cinema
Claudius Hawmmond, who passed away on 24 September 2026, embodied a major yet discreet figure in the Ivorian audiovisual sector. Known primarily for his roles in the television series “La Dernière Voix” where he played “Boss Wilson”, he had also made his mark as a cinema actor and producer. His career illustrates the typical trajectory of contemporary African creators: versatile, entrepreneurial, navigating between several forms of expression (music, audiovisual, cinema) in a cultural ecosystem undergoing full transformation.
As producer and director of H Studios, which he had created in 2013 with his wife, Claudius Hawmmond represented this growing category of independent producers who structure the local audiovisual offering. In cinema, he participated in “Ôbatanga” and in the film “Zanka” by Khady Touré, demonstrating his involvement in the long-term projects of Ivorian cinema under construction. These various hats — actor, producer, creator — made Claudius Hawmmond far more than a mere television figure: a true craftsman of the Ivorian cultural industries.
