To work in oil in Africa, Nigeria, Angola and Uganda do not represent the same type of opportunity. Nigeria and Angola are established markets; Uganda attracts attention for its more recent projects around Lake Albert.
The choice depends on the target profession. A drilling or production profile looks at active basins; a logistics or HSE profile also looks at pipelines, living quarters, ports, roads and subcontractors.
Comparing the three countries
| Country | Employment overview |
|---|---|
| Nigeria | Large, established, competitive market with numerous subcontractors |
| Angola | Offshore production, demand for technical and logistics profiles |
| Uganda | Tilenga, Kingfisher and EACOP projects, needs linked to start-up phase |
In all three cases, jobs are not only found with operators. Contracts often go through engineering, maintenance, transport, inspection, security, industrial catering or living quarters.
Nigeria offers a higher volume of opportunities, but also stronger competition and a complex environment. Angola often requires solid technical profiles, particularly offshore. Uganda draws more attention during development and infrastructure phases.
Why Uganda is attracting attention
The Lake Albert projects, Tilenga and Kingfisher, are associated with the EACOP pipeline to Tanzania. Project communications refer to a plateau of approximately 230,000 barrels per day. This creates both temporary and permanent needs, but also strong competition.
A candidate must therefore follow subcontractors, tenders, construction projects and HSE needs, not just announcements from major companies.
The project timeline is essential. A construction phase does not recruit the same profiles as a production phase. During construction, logistics, HSE, transport, civil engineering and living quarters needs can be significant. In production, positions become more specialised and more stable.
How to apply smartly
Prepare a position-focused CV: HSE, maintenance, logistics, instrumentation, drilling, warehouse, transport. Add certificates, availability, languages, licences, field experience and verifiable references.

The candidate must therefore follow projects like a portfolio of opportunities. It is necessary to identify operators, but also the companies that transport, maintain, inspect, feed, secure and house teams. This is often where first experiences are built.
Sources and methodology
Figures should be read as recent orders of magnitude: economic series are revised, and 2026 projections remain dependent on exchange rates, inflation and commodity prices.
