The capital of Nigeria is Abuja — the official answer, valid in 2025. Yet the confusion with Lagos remains one of the most common on the African continent. These two cities embody two faces of Nigeria: Abuja, seat of federal power since 1991; Lagos, the economic and cultural engine of West Africa. Understanding this duality means understanding the most populous country in Africa.

The official capital of Nigeria is Abuja since 1991, seat of the federal government and political power. However, Lagos remains the economic capital of the country, concentrating the main commercial, financial and cultural activities. This duality explains why Nigeria operates with two complementary metropolises.
“`The capital of Nigeria is Abuja — that is the official answer, valid in 2025. But the confusion with Lagos persists because the two cities play distinct and complementary roles in the most populous country in Africa. Abuja concentrates political power, Lagos concentrates the economy. Understanding this duality means understanding how Nigeria truly works.
What is the capital of Nigeria in 2025: Abuja or Lagos?
Officially, Abuja is the capital. In economic terms, Lagos remains the city that concentrates the most imagination: port, banks, startups, music, advertising, real estate, commercial flows.
Abuja and Lagos: two capitals of Nigeria in practice
Abuja was conceived as a more central federal capital. Its role is institutional: political arbitration, administration, diplomacy, representation of the State.
Why Abuja holds political power
Lagos maintains an advantage that is difficult to replace: density of businesses, maritime access, talent, digital culture and consumer market. For many private players, Lagos remains the gateway to Nigeria.
Key takeaways
- Official capital of Nigeria: Abuja.
- De facto economic capital: Lagos.
- Common mistake: confusing economic weight with political status.
- Macro context: Nigeria in the African GDP 2026.
Key takeaways
Nigeria does not revolve around a single city. Abuja represents the federal State, political arbitrations, ministries and diplomacy. Lagos represents commercial speed, media, finance, tech, culture and a large part of the entrepreneurial energy.
For an investor, a journalist or a student, this difference changes how information is read. A political decision may come from Abuja, but its economic impact is often measured in Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt or other regional hubs.
A useful distinction for reading the country
Abuja does not replace Lagos; it fulfils a different function. It is precisely this coexistence that makes Nigeria difficult to summarise, but also essential to understand.
Why the two cities will remain associated
Nigeria officially transferred its capital from Lagos to Abuja on 12 December 1991, under the military presidency of Ibrahim Babangida. This choice was not trivial: Lagos, saturated and rooted in the Yoruba South-West, could no longer symbolise the unity of a country divided into more than 250 ethnic groups. Abuja, built from scratch at the geographic centre of the country, was meant to embody federal neutrality. The project had been initiated as early as 1976 under Murtala Muhammed, but it took fifteen years for the government to truly install itself there. Today, Abuja houses the presidency, the National Assembly, the Federal Supreme Court and virtually all foreign embassies.
When did the capital transfer take place?
To grasp the concrete difference between the two cities, a few key figures are in order. Lagos is the largest metropolis in Africa with a population estimated between 15 and 20 million inhabitants in the urban area; Abuja has around 4 million. The GDP of Lagos State alone represents more than 30% of Nigeria’s total GDP and exceeds that of many African countries. Nigeria’s stock exchange (NGX) is based in Lagos, as are the headquarters of most of the country’s major banks, multinationals and technology companies. Abuja, on the other hand, concentrates federal public spending, government contracts and diplomatic real estate. For a foreign investor, legal registration may take place in Abuja, but operations almost always take place in Lagos.
Lagos vs Abuja in figures: who weighs what in 2025?
The official capital of Nigeria is Abuja, a federal city built at the centre of the country and inaugurated as capital in 1991. Lagos, often incorrectly cited, is the economic capital and the largest city in the country, but it is not the political capital.
Why is Lagos said to be the capital when Abuja is official?
The confusion stems from the overwhelming weight of Lagos in Nigeria’s economy, culture and daily life. Lagos is home to the stock exchange, the headquarters of major banks, media outlets, the music industry (Afrobeats) and the majority of foreign companies. In international media and common usage, Lagos is often mentioned as the reference point for Nigeria, which perpetuates the mix-up. Abuja nevertheless remains the only capital recognised at an institutional and diplomatic level.
Why Lagos is so often confused with the capital of Nigeria?
The confusion between Lagos and Abuja is not trivial. Lagos was the capital of Nigeria from independence in 1960 until 1991, when the federal government officially moved to Abuja. For more than thirty years, Lagos therefore embodied Nigeria in the eyes of the world. This institutional past, combined with its demographic weight (more than 15 million inhabitants according to recent estimates), economic and media influence, explains why many continue to associate it with capital status.
Moreover, Lagos remains the seat of many foreign embassies, multinationals, influential media and the globally recognised Afrobeats scene. To an outside observer, Lagos “looks” more like a world capital than Abuja, a planned and more administrative city. This perception durably fuels the misconception.
Abuja, federal capital: history, role and functioning in 2025
Abuja was chosen as Nigeria’s new federal capital for geographical, political and ethnic reasons. Located at the centre of the country, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), it offered a neutral position relative to the major ethnic regions — Yoruba in the south-west, Igbo in the south-east, Hausa-Fulani in the north. The aim was to create a symbolically unifying capital, away from the communal tensions of Lagos.
In 2025, Abuja houses the presidency of the Republic, the National Assembly, the Federal Supreme Court, the ministries and virtually the entire diplomatic corps accredited to Nigeria. It is here that the major budgetary decisions are made, along with the orientations of oil policy via the NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Company), and the arbitrations on the national currency, the naira. For any player wishing to understand Nigeria’s regulatory or institutional framework, Abuja is the essential starting point.
What is the capital of Nigeria?
The official capital of Nigeria is Abuja since 12 December 1991, the date of the official transfer of the seat of the federal government from Lagos. Abuja is located in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), at the geographical centre of the country. Lagos, although larger and more economically influential, is not the political capital of Nigeria.
Why did Nigeria move its capital from Lagos to Abuja?
The transfer of the capital from Lagos to Abuja was decided for several reasons: Abuja’s geographical centrality allowing better representation of all regions of the country, ethnic neutrality (Lagos being perceived as too closely associated with the Yoruba people), growing overpopulation and congestion in Lagos, and the political will to build a unified federal national identity. The decision was taken as early as 1976 under General Murtala Mohammed, but the actual transfer did not take place until 1991.
