In the sandy alleyways of Dakar, a young entrepreneur adjusts the cables of a solar panel on the roof of a recycled container. Inside, computers hum softly. This is neither a Silicon Valley start-up, nor a foreign humanitarian project. It is a 100% Senegalese initiative, born of a fierce determination to build a different future. In the shadow of baobab trees and concrete buildings, a new societal ecosystem is taking shape — discreet but powerful.
A youth that invents its own rules
Senegal is young. Very young. Nearly 60% of its population is under 25. In this pool of energy, ideas flow freely and codes are changing. Young people no longer want to wait for solutions to come from above. They create their own.

In Rufisque, Aïssatou, 23, launched a digital barter platform. “I had no money, but I had skills. So I thought: why not exchange what I know how to do for what I need?” she explains. Her application, named Yoonu, is used by more than 12,000 people on the outskirts of Dakar.
This type of initiative illustrates a paradigm shift: development no longer passes only through large institutions. It is built, day by day, on street corners, in garages, on social media. And it is often driven by young people who refuse to flee their country.
Solidarity and resilient communities
Beyond start-ups and apps, an entire culture of solidarity is taking root in neighborhoods. In Pikine, a women’s cooperative transforms plastic waste into ecological paving stones. “We no longer wanted to depend on aid. We wanted to be useful, to produce something concrete,” says Fatou Ndiaye, the project leader.
Every week, dozens of kilos of plastic are collected, melted, and molded. The paving stones are then sold to local authorities. In two years, the cooperative has generated more than 15 million francs CFA in revenue. But beyond the money, it is a dignity regained.
“People stopped looking at us. Now, they listen to us,” says Khady, one of the workers. These women are not merely surviving. They are building an economic model rooted in the social fabric — circular and autonomous.
Technology as a lever for empowerment
Digital technology is no longer a luxury. It is becoming a tool for empowerment. In the working-class neighborhoods of Dakar, fablabs are emerging, often housed in converted containers or garages. There, people learn to code, repair 3D printers, and create connected objects.
“We want young people to understand that they can be producers of technology, not just consumers,” explains Mamadou Diop, founder of LabSén, a digital fabrication space open to everyone. Since 2021, more than 800 young people have been trained there free of charge.
The government is beginning to follow the movement. Public-private partnerships are multiplying to support these initiatives. But the momentum comes first from the ground. From those who no longer wait.
A return to traditions, reinvented
This new ecosystem does not reject its roots. On the contrary, it reinterprets them. In the villages of Sine Saloum, young graduates are returning to revive family farming, but with modern methods.
“We use permaculture, drones to monitor crops, and online sales platforms,” details Ibrahima, 29, an agronomist engineer. With his collective, he has transformed 40 hectares of abandoned land into a profitable and ecological farm.
The model is attracting attention. Young urbanites come to spend a few months on these farms to learn. “We don’t want to pit the city against the countryside. We want to reconnect them,” says Ibrahima. A form of Senegalese neo-ruralism, combining ancestral knowledge with technological innovation.
Spaces for speech and contestation
Change is not limited to the economy. It also touches public discourse. In town squares, cafés, and on TikTok, Senegalese people debate, question, and denounce. The Y’en a marre movement, born in 2011, paved the way. Others have followed.
“Social media has become an agora,” observes sociologist Aminata Sarr. “Young people express their anger there, but also their dreams.” Political podcasts, satirical web series, and civic education videos are circulating widely.
In 2023, an online petition against a mining project gathered 200,000 signatures in one week. It forced the government to suspend the project. A first. “It is proof that our voice matters,” says Cheikh, 21, a student in Saint-Louis.
An informal economy that is formalizing
Senegal still largely lives off its informal economy, which accounts for more than 40% of GDP. But this economy is transforming. Platforms such as Weebi and SunuBus allow small traders and transporters to access digital management tools.
“Before, I wrote everything in a notebook. Now, I have an app that tells me how much I’ve sold, what I need to buy, and how much I owe my suppliers,” explains Moussa, a fruit seller in Thiès. Thanks to these tools, he was able to obtain a microloan and expand his stall.
This discreet but profound movement contributes to the structuring of a more stable and more reliable economic fabric. And it opens the way to broader financial inclusion, particularly for women and young people.
“The future of Senegal is not played out only in ministerial offices or NGO speeches. It is built, every day, in the simple actions of those who refuse to be passive,” summarizes journalist Rokhaya Fall.
So, will this new Senegalese social ecosystem — fragile but bold — succeed in durably changing the rules of the game? Or will it be absorbed by the old logics it seeks to overcome?
