Senegal is one of the most dynamic electronic money markets in West Africa. Diaspora remittances have grown from 132 billion FCFA in 2000 to 2,200 billion FCFA in 2025, a gain of over 2,000 billion FCFA in a quarter of a century, according to public data reported by Le Soleil. In 2023, the country captured 11% of remittances to Africa, placing it among the continent’s top five recipients according to the World Bank, with 1,818.1 billion FCFA received (+8% year-on-year), primarily from France, Italy and Spain. For Senegalese living abroad, two questions keep coming up: where to open an account remotely, and how to transfer money at the best cost. Here is the state of the market in 2026, backed by figures and limits.
Main banks: SGBS, Ecobank, UBA, BOA
The Senegalese banking landscape is dominated by around fifteen institutions, four of which concentrate the bulk of diaspora-focused offerings.

SGBS (Société Générale de Banques au Sénégal) is the subsidiary of the Société Générale group. Its standard current account features free opening and account maintenance capped at 4,274 FCFA per month outside of a package, according to the Comparek comparison tool. The bank offers a savings account paying 3.5% per year net of taxes (ceiling 10 million FCFA) and the remote banking solution CONNECT charged at 1,000 FCFA per month. For the diaspora, opening can be done through the Société Générale network in France, which forwards the request to the Senegalese subsidiary.
Ecobank Sénégal offers a dedicated Diaspora Current Account for Senegalese residents abroad, with remote management via Ecobank Mobile/Online and Rapidtransfer transfers across the group’s 33 countries of presence. It is often the first option cited by diaspora advisors for its dedicated procedure and shorter processing times.
UBA Sénégal has partnered with fintech Wave: a wallet-to-bank link service allows transfers from a Wave account to a UBA account (and vice versa) for 1% VAT-inclusive of the amount of each transaction, with no subscription fee, according to the general terms and conditions published by Wave. Banque Atlantique Sénégal offers an equivalent gateway with Wave at the same rate of 1%.
BOA Sénégal (Bank of Africa) has launched a “Senegalese of the world” offering that highlights online account opening, bank cards, remote banking services and joint support from BOA-Sénégal and BOA-France account managers for international transfers.
Wave and mobile money: costs and limits
Mobile money has transformed the Senegalese market. The BCEAO recorded 14 electronic money institutions within the UMOA at end-2024; transactions via mobile telephony grew by 23.6% in value to reach 126,680 billion FCFA, and the outstanding stock of electronic money issued stood at 1,411.7 billion FCFA (+25.6%).
Wave, the fintech founded by Drew Durbin and Lincoln Quirk, became the first French-speaking unicorn in Africa as early as 2021 and boasts a valuation of approximately 1.7 billion dollars. With nearly 11 million customers and 7.18 million regular users — equivalent to one Wave account for approximately 90% of the adult population — it has conquered the market through aggressive pricing. Its fee schedule is simple: money sending at 1% of the amount, capped at 5,000 FCFA, and above all free deposits and withdrawals. The balance of a standard Wave wallet is capped at 2,000,000 FCFA, and the monthly limit of a verified account reaches 2,000,000 FCFA. In June 2025, Wave raised 137 million dollars in debt from Rand Merchant Bank, British International Investment, Finnfund and Norfund to finance its expansion.
Orange Money remains the densest network with approximately 90,000 cash-out points in Senegal. Its domestic fee schedule is slightly lower than Wave for sending: 0.8% capped at 4,500 FCFA, with free withdrawal. The service also works via USSD at #144# without a smartphone. From Europe, Orange Money charges 2.49 € for a transfer up to 100 € and 3.79 € beyond that, with no withdrawal fees on the Senegalese side.
Free Money, the offering from operator Free (accessible to all, without any obligation to use a Free SIM), charges 1% on sending and 1% on withdrawal. In July 2024, Free launched a “All at 0 F” offer making transfers, deposits, withdrawals and payments temporarily free, a promotional campaign aimed at gaining market share from Wave and Orange.
The TTA tax and KYC tiers
Since 16 December 2025, the Money Transfer Tax (TTA) of 0.5% of the amount of each transaction, capped at 2,000 FCFA, applies to mobile money transfers, payments and withdrawals. Created by law n°2025-17 of 27 September 2025, it is collected by the operator (Orange Money first), with exemptions for withdrawals below 20,000 FCFA per 24 hours, cash deposits, salaries and grants.
On the identification side, the BCEAO enforces tiered KYC (Instruction 008-05-2015): tier 1 (phone number only) capped at 150,000 FCFA per month; tier 2 (national ID or passport) at 1,500,000 FCFA per month; tier 3 (identity document + proof of address + source of funds) at 5,000,000 FCFA per month. To raise the cap, a valid identity document must be presented at a branch or with an agent.
Opening an account remotely from the diaspora
Three main routes are available to Senegalese living abroad. A notarized power of attorney: you sign at a notary a legalized power of attorney (with apostille for Senegal) authorizing a relative or a firm to submit the file in Dakar. The consular route: the Senegalese consulate (France, United States, etc.) prepares the file sent to the bank, with a processing time of 2 to 4 weeks. The subsidiary of a foreign bank: a Société Générale France customer can request the opening of an SGBS account through their French branch.
The standard documents are: Senegalese identity document (national ID or passport, often to be legalized), proof of address less than 3 months old in the country of residence, proof of income (last 3 pay slips and/or 3-month bank statement), proof of source of funds, identity photograph, and often a letter explaining the intended use of the account. Banks generally require an initial deposit that varies depending on the institution and the file.
Fees: what each option actually costs
As a guide, based on comparison tools and diaspora advisors, opening a Senegalese current account is free at some institutions (SGBS) and may reach 15,000 FCFA elsewhere; account maintenance ranges from 3,000 to 8,000 FCFA per month; a premium VISA card costs 25,000–50,000 FCFA per year. These amounts vary depending on the bank, the chosen package and status (resident or non-resident). On the mobile money side, domestic sending costs 0.8% (Orange) to 1% (Wave, Free), to which the TTA of 0.5% capped at 2,000 FCFA is added.
| Solution | Advantage | Fees |
|---|---|---|
| Wave | Free deposits and withdrawals, simple app, wallet balance cap 2 M FCFA | Sending 1% (capped at 5,000 FCFA) |
| Orange Money | Densest network (~90,000 points), USSD #144# | Sending 0.8% (capped at 4,500 FCFA), free withdrawal |

| TTA tax (all mobile money transactions) | — | 0.5% per transaction, capped at 2,000 FCFA |
Risks and points to watch
Several pitfalls to avoid. Exchange rates: the CFA franc is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate of 655.957 XOF per 1 €; any provider displaying a rate far from this parity is incorporating a hidden exchange margin. Compliance: since the tightening of anti-money laundering standards (FATF) in 2024, banks require proof of source of funds and reject incomplete files; prepare your documents before incurring legalization costs. Limits: an unverified mobile account is capped at 150,000 FCFA per month, which is insufficient for a real estate project; complete the enhanced KYC if needed. Taxation: an account opened abroad may need to be declared in the country of residence. Finally, always check the current fee schedule before a large transfer, as operators may change it with notice.
