In the bustling alleyways of Kampala, amid the honking of boda-bodas and the loud voices of the markets, a new generation of young Ugandans is reinventing the rules of the economy. They did not wait for permission to succeed. They simply decided the time had come. Their ideas challenge traditions, their businesses attract attention, and their voices are beginning to matter. Who are these young leaders shaping the country’s economic future, sometimes in the shadows, often against the tide?
A youth awakening to economic challenges
Youth unemployment in Uganda exceeds 13%, according to the latest World Bank figures. Yet this statistic says nothing about the energy bubbling up in the popular neighborhoods of Kampala, Gulu, or Mbarara. There, a connected, educated, and bold youth refuses to remain a spectator.

“We were often told that the economy was for the elders, for the elites. But today, we understand that it is our playing field too,” says Sarah Nambassa, 27, founder of an e-commerce platform dedicated to Ugandan artisanal products. In two years, her company has generated more than 200,000 dollars in revenue and now employs 15 people.
This entrepreneurial awakening is driven by several factors: a young population (more than 75% of Ugandans are under 30), growing Internet penetration (nearly 50% in 2023), and a fierce determination to turn obstacles into opportunities.
Techpreneurs: innovation as a driving force
At 31, Moses Kintu embodies this generation of techpreneurs betting on local innovation. In 2020, he launched AgriLink, a mobile application that directly connects small agricultural producers to urban markets. “Farmers were losing up to 40% of their harvests due to lack of outlets. I wanted to create a bridge between them and consumers,” he explains.
AgriLink now claims more than 12,000 active users and has enabled some producers to triple their income. The application has been awarded by the African Union and is now attracting investors from Kenya and Nigeria.
“This is not Silicon Valley here, but we have ideas and we understand our realities better than anyone,” Moses says with a smile. For him, the future of Uganda’s economy depends on inclusive tech, rooted in local needs.
Women leaders: breaking through glass ceilings
In a country where women represent more than half of the active workforce but less than 20% of formal business owners, some are no longer hesitating to challenge the norms.
Rebecca Atwine, 29, founded a plastic recycling company in Jinja. “I grew up near the Nile, and seeing the waste accumulate broke my heart. I wanted to do something concrete,” she recounts. Her company transforms more than 10 tonnes of plastic per month into ecological building materials, while employing a majority of women from disadvantaged backgrounds.
She was recently invited to speak at Makerere University to inspire other young women. “The hardest part is not building a company, it is convincing people that a woman can lead. But once you do it, there is no going back,” she says with determination.
Inclusive finance, a lever for transformation
Another face of this youth in motion is Brian Okello, 26, founder of FinBridge, a fintech specializing in microcredit for unbanked populations. “In Uganda, more than 60% of adults do not have access to a bank account. That is a huge barrier to entrepreneurship,” he explains.
FinBridge uses a credit assessment system based on mobile data and electricity or water payment histories. In less than three years, the startup has granted more than 5,000 microloans, with a repayment rate of 91%.
“We are not just lending money, we are restoring dignity,” Brian summarizes. His ambition? To extend his model across all of East Africa by 2026.
Between tradition and modernity: valuing local knowledge
Uganda’s economic renewal is not limited to technology. It is also rooted in culture, ancestral know-how, and local products. This is the bet of Lillian Kaggwa, 30, who launched an organic cosmetics brand based on local ingredients such as shea butter, moringa oil, and forest honey.
“Our grandmothers knew how to care for skin better than any imported cream. I want to bring that knowledge back into the spotlight,” she asserts. In less than a year, her brand is distributed in three East African countries and is attracting the attention of the Ugandan diaspora in Europe.
Beyond business, Lillian advocates for a more deeply rooted economy: “We can be modern without denying our roots. That is actually our greatest strength.”
An ecosystem still fragile, but in full transformation
Despite their dynamism, these young leaders operate in a complex environment. Limited access to funding, failing infrastructure, burdensome bureaucracy: obstacles are plentiful. Yet many refuse to be held back.
“We no longer wait for the State to come and save us. We build our own paths,” says David Musoke, co-founder of a coworking space in Entebbe. He welcomes more than 200 young entrepreneurs, developers, and freelancers every month. “The ecosystem is beginning to take shape. What we need now is more collaboration, more visibility.”
Initiatives such as the Youth Startup Academy, supported by South Korea, or the incubation program at Makerere University, show that things are changing. But the road ahead is still long.
These young leaders are not seeking glory. They are seeking to prove that Uganda’s economy can reinvent itself through its youth, for its youth. And what if that were the true face of the future?
