In 2026, a painting by Chéri Samba sells for 380,000 euros at Christie’s London. A few weeks later, a work by Ivorian artist Laetitia Ky is contested at an auction in Hong Kong by three buyers, two of whom are based in Singapore and Shanghai. The contemporary African art market is no longer a preserve for Western patrons — and Francophone African collectors, long absent from the front row, are now forced to redefine their strategy in the face of Asian competition that is as well-capitalized as it is aggressive.
In 2026, the contemporary African art market is contested between Francophone collectors and Asian buyers, particularly Chinese and Singaporean ones. Works from West Africa reach 50,000 to 500,000 € at public sales. Francophone collectors are betting on online galleries, direct access to studios, and regional fairs to get ahead of international speculation.
A market in recomposition: the figures that change everything
According to the Art Basel & UBS Global Art Market 2025 report (published in early 2026), sales of contemporary African art at international auction houses grew by 34% between 2022 and 2025, reaching an estimated volume of 620 million dollars worldwide. This figure, still modest compared to the 2.7 billion generated by contemporary Asian art over the same period, conceals a spectacular catch-up dynamic.

What strikes observers in 2026 is less the raw growth than the geography of buyers. Asian buyers — primarily based in Hong Kong, Singapore, and major Chinese cities — now account for approximately 18% of hammer prices on works by contemporary African artists at major Western auction houses, compared to less than 5% in 2018. This surge is not insignificant: it is driven by a portfolio allocation logic, where African art is perceived as an undervalued asset class with strong appreciation potential.
The artists driving prices up
A few names are shaping the high end of the market in 2026. Beyond Chéri Samba (DRC), whose large narrative canvases regularly exceed 200,000 € at public sale, the rising prominence of the following is notable:
- Kudzanai-Violet Hwami (Zimbabwe/UK): hammer prices between 80,000 and 220,000 € at Sotheby’s in 2025-2026;
- Didier William (Haiti/USA, often classified within the Francophone African diaspora): personal record at 310,000 $ at Phillips in 2025;
- Billie Zangewa (Malawi/South Africa): silk tapestries showing clear progression, between 60,000 and 150,000 €;
- Roméo Mivekannin (Benin/France): meteoric emergence, works having risen from 8,000 to 45,000 € in three years.
It is precisely on this last profile — the emerging Francophone artist still below the radar of major speculators — that savvy Francophone collectors are now concentrating their attention.
The positioning of Francophone collectors: between structural advantages and gaps to close
Francophone African collectors — whether based in Abidjan, Dakar, Douala, Paris, or Montreal — hold real competitive advantages that Asian buyers cannot easily replicate. The first is cultural and linguistic proximity to a large part of the artistic production from West and Central Africa. A collector from Dakar can meet a Senegalese artist in their studio, understand their project without an intermediary, and acquire a work before any international exhibition — sometimes for less than 5,000 €.
The second advantage is access to regional fairs. The Dakar Biennale (Dak’Art), held every two years, and recent editions of Art X Lagos or the Cape Town Art Fair offer privileged entry points to artists at the takeoff stage. In 2026, the Akaa (Also Known As Africa) fair in Paris remains an unmissable event for Francophone collectors looking to position acquisitions under 20,000 € on high-potential artists.
Mistakes that too many Francophone collectors still make
Yet several recurring mistakes are hampering the development of this collector base:
- Waiting for Western validation: buying an artist only after they have been exhibited in Paris or London already means paying a premium of 200 to 400% over the studio price. The most sophisticated Asian buyers no longer make this mistake.
- Neglecting documentation: a certificate of authenticity, a provenance file, and a complete technical record can triple the resale value of a work at a public sale. Many informal acquisitions in Francophone Africa remain unusable on international markets due to a lack of traceability.
- Ignoring online African art galleries: platforms such as Artsy (Africa section), Latitudes Online, or initiatives like the Tafeta gallery (London) or Galerie Cécile Fakhoury (Abidjan/Paris) now offer works online with secure payment and certificates. Not consulting them regularly means cutting oneself off from a flow of acquisitions at reasonable prices.
African art auctions vs. Asia: understanding the logic of Hong Kong and Singapore buyers
To position oneself effectively, one must first understand why Asian buyers are interested in contemporary African art. The answer is almost exclusively financial. In a context of post-Covid portfolio diversification and the saturation of the contemporary Chinese art market, African art appears as a segment with an attractive risk/return ratio.
The family offices in Singapore and the private collectors in Shanghai entering this market in 2026 are not, for the most part, seeking to build a coherent collection — they are looking to capture value appreciation over five to ten years. This purely speculative approach has a direct effect: it drives up bids on already-institutionalized artists (present in public collections, exhibited in international museums) while leaving wide spaces available in the emerging segment.
Where is the real playing field in 2026?
For a Francophone collector with a budget of 10,000 to 50,000 €, investing in contemporary art in West Africa currently presents three priority entry windows:
- Studios and ateliers: direct purchase in Abidjan, Dakar, Cotonou, Yaoundé, before any representation by an international gallery. Observed prices: 2,000 to 15,000 € for medium-format works by mid-career artists.
- Online African gallery sales: Galerie Cécile Fakhoury, Galerie Selebe Yoon (Dakar), 1-54 Online. Accessible entry prices, already-documented works.
- Auctions at African auction houses: Piasa (Paris, Africa section), Bonhams African Art (London), as well as players like Artcurial, which is increasingly integrating contemporary African artists into its general sales.
Online African art galleries: the underused lever for Francophone collectors
In 2026, online African art galleries represent one of the most dynamic growth channels in the sector. The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair platform, which operates a permanent online shop between its physical editions (New York, London, Marrakech), recorded a 40% increase in digital transactions between 2024 and 2026. Available works cover a range of 1,500 to 80,000 €, with strong representation of Francophone artists.
The Artsy platform today lists more than 4,200 works by active contemporary African artists, a large proportion of which come from Francophone Africa. Galleries such as Magnin-A (Paris), specializing in African popular art and contemporary avant-gardes, offer works there with a publicly viewable price history — a valuable tool for any collector wishing to assess the market trajectory of an artist before investing.
Expert advice: setting up alerts on Artsy and following the monthly newsletters of online African galleries makes it possible to anticipate available works before they go to public sale — a decisive advantage over Asian buyers, who often rely on intermediary art advisors with a slower reaction time in the Francophone segment.
FAQ — Frequently asked questions about the contemporary African art market
How do you invest in contemporary African art when starting out with a small budget?
With a budget of 1,000 to 5,000 €, it is entirely possible to start a contemporary African art collection by going through online galleries (1-54, Artsy, Selebe Yoon) or by buying directly from the studio during residencies and local exhibitions. Prioritize artists who already have gallery representation, even modest, to ensure the traceability of the work. Avoid undocumented purchases, even if attractive in terms of price.
Do Asian auctions really drive up African art prices?
Yes, but selectively. In 2026, Asian pressure is concentrated on around twenty already-institutionalized African artists, whose market values have increased by 60 to 120% in five years. The rest of the market — the vast majority of contemporary African artists — remains little affected by this speculation, which maintains accessible entry points for patient and well-informed collectors.
What are the best fairs for buying contemporary African art in 2026?
The unmissable fairs in 2026 are: Akaa (Paris, November), 1-54 (London, October; New York, May), Art X Lagos (November), the Cape Town Art Fair (February), and the Dakar Biennale. For Francophone collectors based in Africa, Art X Lagos and Dak’Art offer the best opportunities for direct acquisition at pre-international prices.
How do you verify the authenticity and value of a contemporary African artwork before buying?
Three essential reflexes: demand a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist or their representing gallery; consult the price history on Artsy or Invaluable for artists who have already been auctioned; and call on an Africa-specialized art advisor for purchases above 20,000 €. Provenance errors can make a work unsellable on the international secondary market.
Is it better to buy from a gallery or at auction for contemporary African art?
At a gallery for primary acquisitions (first purchase of a work by a living artist): you generally pay a price consistent with the market value and benefit from documentary support. At auction for the secondary market and for already-established artists, where price transparency is total but where competition with international buyers (including Asians) can drive bids beyond reasonable value. Arbitrate according to your holding horizon: short term (resale within 3 years), favor artists with rising market values at a gallery; long term, auctions can offer good surprises.
Do Francophone African diaspora collectors have an advantage in this market?
Yes, and this advantage is often underestimated. Francophone diaspora collectors (Paris, Brussels, Montreal, Geneva) combine cultural proximity to Francophone African artists with direct access to European auction houses and fairs. In 2026, several of them have structured informal collector clubs to pool market information and collectively access works in private sale — a practice that is developing rapidly in the face of growing international competition.
