You’ve booked your safari in South Africa and, in the excitement of the moment, you almost slipped a bright red t-shirt into your suitcase. Fatal mistake. What you wear in the bush is not a matter of personal style — it’s a question of safety, comfort and respect for the environment. Guides in the Kruger, Sabi Sand or Madikwe repeat it to every group: wrong clothing ruins outings, frightens animals and exposes visitors to unnecessary risks. Here’s what you really need to know before zipping up your bag.
Why safari attire is not simply a matter of aesthetics
Many travellers think the safari dress code belongs to colonial imagery — the khaki shorts and epaulette shirts of another era. In reality, these clothing choices respond to a very precise ecological and practical logic. In South Africa, safaris take place under specific climatic and wildlife conditions that impose real constraints.

Animals perceive bright colours as a threat or an anomaly in their natural environment. A group dressed in neutral clothing remains discreet and blends into the savanna landscape. Moreover, insects — ticks, mosquitoes, tsetse flies in certain areas — easily target exposed skin and dark fabrics that absorb heat. Knowing how to dress for a safari in South Africa is therefore as serious a preparation as choosing your lodge.
The most common clothing mistakes
Wearing bright colours or white
White reflects light and attracts biting insects. Bright colours — red, orange, yellow — disturb animals and make you visible from very far away. Local guides are categorical: banish white, dark navy blue (which attracts tsetse flies), red and any fluorescent colour from your safari wardrobe.
Neglecting clothing sun protection
Morning game drives begin before dawn, when it is still cold. By midday, temperatures can exceed 35°C in the Kruger. Wearing short-sleeved clothing all day exposes arms to severe sunburn and insect bites. Many travellers also underestimate the power of UV rays on an open game drive: the wind creates a deceptively cool impression.
Choosing cheap synthetic materials
Low-grade synthetic fabrics such as polyester do not breathe, cause excessive sweating and release odours that can alert certain animals. They do dry quickly, but the discomfort they generate during long hours in an off-road vehicle is real.
Forgetting to layer up
This is the classic mistake of first-time safari-goers: heading out in a t-shirt for a 5:30 am departure, assuming it will be warm. In the South African bushveld, mornings are cool, sometimes close to 10°C during the austral winter (June to August). Without layerable clothing, the pleasure of the safari quickly turns into a freezing ordeal.
The real clothing kit recommended by local guides
Here is the kit validated by rangers from the Kruger National Park and private reserves in the Limpopo region. These safari clothing tips for South Africa come from concrete field experience, not outdoor fashion catalogues.
Colours to absolutely prioritise
- Khaki and beige: the universal reference, discreet and durable
- Olive green and sage green: ideal for blending into savanna vegetation
- Brown and sienna: perfect for the dry landscapes of the Kruger
- Light grey: acceptable and comfortable in intense heat
The core clothing kit
- 2 to 3 long-sleeved shirts in lightweight cotton or breathable technical fabric: sun and insect protection without overheating
- A lightweight convertible cargo trouser (converts to shorts): versatile, with practical pockets for a notebook or insect repellent
- A fleece or lightweight jacket for morning and evening game drives
- A thin waterproof windbreaker for the rainy season (November to February)
- 2 pairs of high socks in cotton: protection against ticks during bush walks
- Closed walking shoes or lightweight ankle boots: never open sandals during guided walks
- A wide-brimmed hat (safari hat or bush hat style): essential in an open vehicle
- A neck gaiter or bandana: protection against trail dust and sunburn on the back of the neck
What to add depending on the season
During the austral winter (June to August), nights and mornings are cold in the Kruger and the Limpopo reserves. Add a lightweight compressible down jacket, thin gloves and a beanie for night game drives. In summer (November to March), focus on ultra-breathable fabrics, SPF 50+ sun protection and a powerful insect repellent.
What you need to know specifically for Kruger Park
To know what to wear in Kruger Park, you need to factor in two realities specific to this park: game drives take place in open or semi-open vehicles, and red laterite dust is ever-present on the tracks. This fine dust gets everywhere and permanently stains light-coloured clothing.
Rangers recommend keeping a reusable bag in the vehicle to protect your camera and personal belongings during dusty crossings. Opt for clothing you won’t mind getting dirty: the Kruger is not a photo shoot, it is an immersion in wild nature.
For guided bush walks — available in certain areas of the park and in adjacent private reserves — closed shoes are mandatory and rangers may refuse entry to people wearing inappropriate clothing. This is a safety rule, not an aesthetic whim.
Often forgotten but essential accessories
- Polarised sunglasses: protect your eyes during long hours in an open vehicle
- Low gaiters: for bush walks, they prevent ticks from climbing up inside your trousers
- A 20L backpack in neutral fabric: to carry water, binoculars and sun protection during outings
- Spare clothing packed in a waterproof bag: the sudden downpours of the wet season are unpredictable
FAQ: your questions about safari attire in South Africa
Can you wear military camouflage for a safari in South Africa?
No. Wearing military camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in South Africa and in several other African countries. This rule is strictly enforced at borders and in parks. Opt for plain patterns in natural tones instead.
Do you need to buy specialist safari brand clothing?
Not necessarily. Major brands such as Craghoppers, Columbia or Rohan offer excellent technical clothing, but standard hiking outfits in the right colours work very well. What matters is the neutral colour and fabric quality, not the logo on the pocket.
Do children have to follow the same dress code?
Absolutely. The same rules apply to children: neutral colours, long sleeves for game drives, closed shoes for walking activities. Some lodges even offer safari kits for children to hire.
How do you manage laundry during a week-long safari stay?
Most lodges and camps in the Kruger offer a laundry service, sometimes included in the package. Packing 3 to 4 game drive outfits is sufficient for a week. Technical fabrics dry quickly and can be rinsed by hand in the evening.
Can you wear jewellery or shiny watches on a safari?
The metallic reflections from jewellery and watches can attract animals’ attention and single you out within the group. Leave your valuable jewellery at the hotel and wear a watch with a matte dial if possible. Discretion is always the best ally in the bush.
