Ethiopia is the 4th largest economy in Africa in 2026, with a nominal GDP of approximately 175 billion dollars. This growth nonetheless raises questions about its sustainability in the face of internal tensions and demographic pressure — Ethiopia is the 2nd most populous country in Africa with more than 125 million inhabitants.

Will Ethiopia overtake Kenya economically?
In total nominal GDP, Ethiopia (~175 Bn) already surpasses Kenya (~130 Bn) thanks to its demographic size. But in GDP per capita, Kenya (~2 350 USD) remains well above Ethiopia (~1 400 USD). Kenya also has a more diversified economy, a more developed financial sector and a higher level of urban infrastructure.
What are the economic risks in Ethiopia?
Ethiopia faces several structural risks: very high inflation (20-25%), ethnic and political tensions (Tigray conflict 2020-2022, instability in Oromia), growing external debt (notably to China), and dependence on international agricultural markets. Peace and political stability are the main conditions for maintaining the growth trajectory.
