Why are salaries higher in Abidjan?
Abidjan accounts for 70% of Côte d’Ivoire’s GDP and hosts the majority of regional corporate headquarters. The presence of international banks (Société Générale, BNP, Ecobank, Standard Chartered), multinationals (Total, Orange, MTN, Unilever, Nestlé), and international organizations (BAD, BOAD, BRVM) creates demand for qualified profiles with salary scales aligned to regional standards. This drives up compensation across the entire local ecosystem.
FAQ – Salaries in Côte d’Ivoire 2026
What is the average salary in Côte d’Ivoire in 2026?
In the formal sector, the average Ivorian salary is around 250 000 to 320 000 FCFA per month. In Abidjan’s business districts (Plateau, Zone 4, Cocody), average salaries are significantly higher. The informal sector, which accounts for more than 55% of employment, generates much lower incomes, often between 60 000 and 150 000 FCFA.
What is the SMIG in Côte d’Ivoire in 2026?
The Ivorian SMIG is set at approximately 75 000 FCFA per month (around 113 euros). This is slightly higher than the Senegalese SMIG (70 000 FCFA) but lower than what most formal employers in Abidjan pay. In practice, companies in the agro-industrial and services sectors pay between 100 000 and 200 000 FCFA for unskilled positions.
Is it better to work in Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal?
Côte d’Ivoire offers salaries that are on average slightly higher than Senegal, particularly in finance, telecoms, and agro-industry. However, the cost of living in Abidjan (rent, transportation) is also higher than in Dakar. The comparison depends mainly on the sector and the level of position targeted. For technology profiles, Dakar offers a more dynamic startup ecosystem, while Abidjan is stronger for corporate positions in major regional companies.
