How to identify a profitable business idea in Gabon?

Entrepreneurship in Gabon is developing around digital technology, business services, the green economy, local processing and solutions for young urban dwellers. Gabonese startups face three major obstacles: access to financing, technical support and the limited size of the domestic market.

Entrepreneurship in Gabon: where are the opportunities?

Gabon, a country rich in natural resources, is seeing the emergence of a youth eager for innovation. According to a World Bank study published in 2023, more than 64% of young Gabonese people wish to start their own business within the next five years. An impressive figure, but one that conceals a more complex reality.

“I tried to launch a local delivery app, but the administrative procedures took me more than six months,” says Stéphane Moussavou, 29, a graduate in computer science. “In the meantime, I lost my first investors.”

Lack of access to financing, regulatory instability and heavy bureaucracy still hamper entrepreneurial momentum. Many initiatives remain at the project stage, or fade out before they even get off the ground.

A bold youth faced with structural barriers

With more than 62% of the population connected to the Internet, Gabon has one of the highest digital penetration rates in Central Africa. Yet the digital economy remains in its infancy.

“The digital sector is an immense opportunity for our young people, but it is still too poorly structured,” explains Nadège Mboumba, director of the Ogooué Lab incubator. “We have talent, but very little adapted training, and Internet connections are still too unstable outside of Libreville.”

Startups such as Keva, specializing in waste management via a mobile app, or WAGUI, an e-commerce platform for local artisans, are nonetheless showing the way. Digital technology could allow Gabon to skip stages of development, provided that the infrastructure keeps pace.

The digital sector: an unevenly exploited lever for transformation

In a country covered 88% by forest, the green economy is not a slogan, but a necessity. Young entrepreneurs are seizing upon it to innovate differently.

“I grew up in a village where plastic waste was invading the rivers,” recounts Clarisse Ndong, founder of GreenBox, a company that transforms plastics into construction materials. “I wanted to take action, but also to create jobs.”

Sustainable development is thus becoming fertile ground for new ideas. Organic farming, renewable energy, responsible tourism: these are all sectors in full ferment. But here again, funding is lacking, and public policies struggle to keep up.

Between ecology and innovation: the bet on sustainable entrepreneurship

Despite the rhetoric, oil remains the pillar of Gabon’s economy, accounting for more than 80% of exports. A dependence that holds back diversification and limits investment in other sectors.

“As long as the state puts all its money on hydrocarbons, entrepreneurs will struggle to exist,” argues economist Jean-Paul Obiang. “A strong political will is needed to redirect priorities.”

The Fonds Gabonais d’Investissements Stratégiques (FGIS) recently launched several initiatives to support SMEs, but the impact remains limited. The transition to a more diversified economy is slow, and young entrepreneurs often have to fend for themselves.

An economy still too dependent on oil

The globalization of innovation is disrupting established norms. Artificial intelligence, blockchain, the collaborative economy: these trends are redefining the rules of the game, sometimes to the detriment of less prepared countries.

“The danger is finding ourselves overwhelmed by foreign platforms that kill our local initiatives,” warns Sylvain Ebang, a digital strategy consultant. “But if we get organized, we can also turn these shifts to our advantage.”

Can Gabon create its own models, adapted to its culture and environment? The example of the “Made in Gabon” project, which promotes local products through short supply chains, shows that another path is possible. But it requires vision, coordination and resilience.

Global shifts: threat or opportunity?

More and more stakeholders are mobilizing to build a genuine ecosystem: incubators, coworking spaces, startup competitions, partnerships with universities. In 2022, Gabon hosted its first National Innovation Forum, bringing together more than 500 participants from across the country.

“We need to create bridges between project holders, investors and institutions,” explains Fatima Essono, head of the StartGabon program. “Alone, you don’t get very far. Together, we can build a future.”

The signals are there, still faint but promising. The challenge now is to transform individual momentum into collective dynamics, and to make Gabon a full participant in global entrepreneurial shifts.

As lines shift on a planetary scale, can Gabon find its own path, between modernity and identity, risk and opportunity? Nothing is written in advance. But one thing is certain: the story is only just beginning.
