In a dusty lecture hall in Dakar, a young woman raises her hand. Her name is Amina, 22 years old, a student in environmental engineering. Her gaze is determined. She doesn’t just want to earn a degree. She wants to change the world. And she is not alone.
Campuses in full ferment
Across the continent, African universities are buzzing with ideas, projects and ambitions. Long confined to a secondary role in the global landscape of higher education, they are today undergoing a full transformation. And they are shaping a generation determined to write a new page in African history.

At Ashesi University in Ghana, leadership courses are just as important as mathematics. “We are not just training engineers or economists. We are training responsible citizens,” says Patrick Awuah, founder and former engineer at Microsoft. The university, founded in 2002, is today one of the most respected on the continent.
In South Africa, the University of Cape Town (UCT) has become a think tank for public policy. In 2023, it launched an interdisciplinary programme on climate governance, bringing together students, researchers and policymakers. “Our students don’t want to wait ten years to act. They want solutions now,” explains Professor Thandi Mkhize, director of the programme.
Programmes rooted in African realities
Unlike imported models, the new African programmes align with local challenges: rapid urbanisation, energy transition, sustainable agriculture, and public health. At the Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, a master’s degree in agricultural innovation attracts dozens of students every year from Senegal, Mali and Côte d’Ivoire.
“We learn to design irrigation systems adapted to our soils, our climates, our resources,” says Moussa, 24 years old, originally from Kayes. “I want to go back to my village and show that we can farm differently.”
In Nairobi, Strathmore University has set up a social enterprise incubator. Over five years, more than 300 projects have been launched, of which 60 % are still active. “Our students don’t dream of leaving. They dream of building here,” emphasises Grace Wanjiru, head of the programme.
Strategic partnerships with the world
African universities no longer work in isolation. They are forging alliances with prestigious institutions: MIT, Sciences Po, Oxford, but also with universities in Asia and Latin America. These partnerships allow for the exchange of knowledge, methods, and above all, visions of the future.
In 2022, Université Mohammed VI Polytechnique (UM6P) in Morocco signed an agreement with Columbia University to develop joint programmes in artificial intelligence and sustainable development. “We want to train African leaders capable of engaging with the world without losing their local roots,” says Karim El Aynaoui, president of the university.
These alliances also make it possible to attract high-level professors. In Kigali, the African campus of Carnegie Mellon University welcomes teachers from all corners of the globe. “It’s an intellectual melting pot. Ideas fly in every direction,” confides Lillian, a student in cybersecurity.
The emergence of African leadership
What stands out in these universities is confidence. A new confidence, rooted in the awareness of a potential that has long been underestimated. Students are no longer content to absorb knowledge: they question it, reinvent it, and localise it.
In Lagos, Pan-Atlantic University has introduced a course in African philosophy applied to management. “We are rediscovering our thinkers, our traditions, our models of governance. This is not folklore, it is innovation,” explains Professor Adewale Ogunleye.
And the results are there. According to a study conducted by the African Leadership Academy, 78 % of graduates from next-generation African institutions start a business or join an impact project within three years of graduating. “We are not training executors, but builders,” insists Fadima, 27 years old, a graduate of the African Leadership University (ALU) in Mauritius.
Women at the forefront
One of the strongest signs of this silent revolution is the rise of women. In many universities, they now represent more than half of enrolments in science and technology programmes.
At Makerere University in Uganda, the Women in Tech programme has enabled more than 2 000 young women to train in coding, robotics and data analysis. “I want to create an app to facilitate access to healthcare in rural areas,” confides Joan, 20 years old. “Before, I thought it was impossible. Today, I know I can do it.”
This dynamic is not limited to university benches. Many graduates are accessing leadership positions in NGOs, businesses or public institutions. At 35, Fatou Bâ became the youngest Minister of Education in Senegal. She is a graduate of Université Gaston Berger in Saint-Louis. “That is where I learned to think for myself,” she says simply.
Persistent challenges, but a contagious energy
Of course, not everything is perfect. Infrastructure remains insufficient, funding sometimes precarious, access unequal. In some regions, political tensions or strikes still paralyse campuses. But one thing has changed: the momentum.
According to UNESCO, the number of students in sub-Saharan Africa has multiplied fivefold since the year 2000, reaching more than 20 million in 2023. And this growth shows no sign of slowing. “This is a generation that no longer waits for someone to extend a helping hand. It builds its own bridges,” observes Togolese economist Kako Nubukpo.
In the corridors of African universities, one hears talk of blockchain, regenerative agriculture, food sovereignty, and AI ethics. People debate, challenge, and dream. And above all, they act.
Because for these young people, knowledge is no longer a luxury. It is a weapon. A promise. An urgency.
So, will the next great global innovation emerge from a laboratory in Nairobi or a hackathon in Accra? Perhaps. Or perhaps from an idea scribbled in a notebook by a student from Bamako. What if Africa were already writing the future?
