In the humid dawn, thousands of footsteps echo across the platforms of Sadat station. Tired faces, hurried gazes. Beneath the chaotic streets of Cairo, another city awakens, underground, rhythmed by the rumble of trains. Cairo’s metro, discreet yet essential, shapes the daily lives of more than 3 million people. Yet few measure how much this rail network has become the beating heart of a silent but profound urban transformation.
A project born out of urgency
At the end of the 1970s, Cairo was suffocating. The Egyptian capital, already overpopulated, saw its population explode. Traffic jams paralyzed the main arteries, buses overflowed, horns blared in permanent chaos. The government of the time understood that a radical change was necessary. In 1987, the first metro line was inaugurated. A first on the African continent.

“It was a bold bet at the time,” recalls Ahmed El-Sayed, a former engineer on the project. “Nobody believed we could dig under this thousand-year-old city without waking its ghosts.”
Line 1 connects Helwan in the south to El Marg in the north. It crosses the historic heart of Cairo, offering a fast and reliable alternative to surface transport. Today, the network comprises three main lines, stretching over more than 80 kilometers. A fourth is under construction, and a fifth is already being planned.
A vital link between worlds
The metro does not only connect stations. It connects worlds. On board a train, a law student rubs shoulders with a street vendor, a hurried executive shares space with a grandmother in a djellaba. It is one of the rare places where social classes intersect, in a country where inequalities are glaring.
“The metro is the only place where I feel equal to others,” confides Mariam, 26, a nurse. “Here, we are all in the same carriage, at the same pace.”
Every day, more than 3.5 million passengers use the network. A figure that is expected to reach 6 million by 2030. The metro absorbs part of the demographic pressure of a city that now counts more than 22 million inhabitants in its urban area.
A lever for urban development
Beyond transport, the metro is redrawing the map of Cairo. Neighborhoods served by the network are experiencing rising property values, businesses are flourishing around stations, and new economic hubs are emerging.
In Heliopolis, a formerly quiet residential neighborhood, the arrival of line 3 has transformed the landscape. “In five years, rents have doubled,” explains Mahmoud, a real estate agent. “Cafés, shopping centers, offices have sprung up like mushrooms.”
The metro is thus becoming a tool for urban planning. It channels flows, decongests the city center, and stimulates the local economy. The government is counting on it to support the growth of the New Administrative Capital, under construction to the east of Cairo. An extension of line 3 is already planned to connect it directly.
A technological and human challenge
Building a metro in a city as ancient and dense as Cairo is an achievement. The lines cross archaeological zones, unstable water tables, and overcrowded neighborhoods. Construction must contend with history, geology, and the daily lives of residents.
“We had to move tombs, work around mosques, suspend construction during Ramadan,” recounts Youssef, site manager on line 4. “Every meter dug is a battle.”
But the challenges are not only technical. Managing the network, its safety, cleanliness, and accessibility still pose problems. Trains are often packed, delays are frequent, and infrastructure is aging. The government has launched a vast modernization program, with the help of international partners such as France, Japan, and China.
A fragile space of freedom
The metro is also a social microcosm. It is where tensions, hopes, and revolts are expressed. During the 2011 uprisings, certain stations became rallying points. Political messages scrawled on walls, songs hummed in corridors… The metro has witnessed history in the making.
But it is also a place of control. Cameras, police officers, searches. The state watches. “We feel observed, but we have no choice,” murmurs Salma, a sociology student. “We live in a society crammed into a carriage.”
Women-only carriages have existed since the beginning, to combat harassment. A space that is both protective and revealing of a persistent unease. Despite everything, for many, these carriages are a rare moment of respite in a city that never sleeps.
A future suspended on rails
Cairo’s metro is at a crossroads. It must expand, modernize, and adapt to a rapidly changing megalopolis. But it must also remain accessible. The ticket price, recently raised to 10 Egyptian pounds (approximately 0.30 €), already weighs on the poorest.
“If this continues, people will no longer be able to use it,” worries Fathi, a retiree. “And then, what will be left?”
The metro is more than a means of transport. It is a promise. That of a Cairo that is fluid, breathable, connected. But this promise rests on fragile rails. Every train that sets off is a bet on the future of a city in perpetual ferment.
And what if, at its core, this underground metro were not only a tool of urban transformation, but the mirror of a country in search of movement and balance?
